Jonny Adam won the 2016 Sunoco Whelen Challenge last weekend, as challengers Terrence Woodward and Victor Correa were unable to score enough points to topple the British GT champion at the Monza round of Radical Euro Masters.
The result of this victory for Adam earns him a drive at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January, racing the #31 Whelen-sponsored Action Express Racing Corvette DP at the US endurance classic.
This comes after the Scotsman won the GT3 category in the 2015 Avon Tyres British GT Championship with Beechdean AMR.
“I am delighted to win the 2016 Sunoco Whelen Challenge this year which has topped off a successful season after winning the GT3 British GT Championship,” said Adam. “It’s a great prize, and I can’t thank Anglo American Oil Company (Sunoco) enough for this opportunity. I am looking forward to heading back to Daytona and racing with Action Express in the #31 Whelen Daytona Prototype. Can’t wait until January now!”
“We’re absolutely delighted to have the 2015 British GT3 Champion as the 2016 Sunoco Whelen Challenge winner!” commented Anders Hildebrand, MD of Anglo American Oil Company. “Jonny Adam did an outstanding job in Beechdean British GT this season. He scored highly with points from pole positions, fastest laps and race results, not only keeping British GT Challengers at bay, but also keen challengers from Radical Enduro and Radical European Masters.
“Jonny will follow in the footsteps of Derek Johnston, Ross Kaiser, Felipe Nasr, Ivan Bellarosa, Bradley Smith and Phil Keen who all had an amazing time and impressed at Daytona. We’re 100% that Jonny will do an excellent job with the 2015 IMSA Championship team Action Express in the #31 Whelen Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype!
