A crash for Carlos Sainz Jr curtailed the final practice session at the Sochi Autodrom, with the Spanish driver being taken to the medical centre after being extracted from his car.
The Scuderia Toro Rosso driver appeared to lose control of his car entering turn 13, spinning firstly into the wall at the side of the track and then helplessly hitting the wall at the end of the run-off zone at high speed.
The session was immediately halted while marshals and the medical team could attend to Sainz, with the Spaniard firstly being taken to the medical centre before being airlifted to hospital.
Sainz did appear to give a thumbs up as he entered the ambulance, but it is likely that he will not be able to compete for the rest of the weekend.
The Checkered Flag will bring updates on Sainz’s condition as and when more is known.
