Pirelli announce tyre choices for the Russian Grand Prix

1 Mins read

Pirelli have announced the three compound choices for the fourth round of the 2016 Formula One season in Sochi for the Russian Grand Prix.

The Italian manufacturer will be taking the Supersoft, Soft and Medium tyres, the same compounds that have been chosen for the first three races of the season. Pirelli have said that each driver must have one set of soft and one set of medium available to them for the race.

Following the 2016 regulations, each driver must save one set of the softest nominated compounds for Q3. With the set being given back to Pirelli after Q3 for the drivers who qualify in the top 10, while the rest of the field will keep the set for the race.

Formula 1 teams are free to choose the remaining sets, making up a total of 13 sets for the Grand Prix weekend.

Due to the nature of the regulations, teams will have to nominate their choices of compounds well before the scheduled Grand Prix, with the tyre choices for the opening trio of races already having been submitted by teams to Pirelli without being able to test their 2016 cars.  Pre-season testing begins at the end of February at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.
