Dorlin Blitzes First Clio Series Qualifying Of 2016

by Simon Paice

James Dorlin led the way in the opening Michelin Clio Cup Series qualifying session of the season at Oulton Park, putting his Westbourne Motorsport Clio on pole position for both the day’s races.

A best lap time of 1m 36.872s put Dorlin on pole for the opening race by half a second to his nearest challenger, with his second best time giving him top spot for race two by a similar margin.

That closest rival was Brett Lidsey, the MRM contender being over a second clear of anyone else as the top two stamped their authority on the field around the Oulton Park Island circuit.

A late lap from Tom Barley saw him snatch third on the grid for race one from Luke Pinder by the narrowest of margins, with just 0.059s separating them at the chequered flag.

Reigning Road Series champion Pinder has third for the second grid though as he makes his Race Series debut, with Barley only able to manage fifth for that race.

Sam Randon and Daniel Kirby complete the top six on the grid for race one, with Ben Colburn, Tyler Lidsey and Ben Palmer rounding out the Race class entries.

For race two, Randon will line up fourth ahead of Barley and Kirby, with Colburn, Lidsey and Palmer in the same order.

In the Road Series, Sarah Franklin secured a pair of class pole positions in her Westbourne-prepared Renaultsport 197, with Nic Harrison and Jack Fabby taking a second and third place apiece.

The opening race of the day takes place at 11:30, with race two at 15:50. Keep an eye on The Checkered Flag through the day for race reports.
