Ferrari finish the last day of testing in Barcelona on top

2 Mins read

Sebastian Vettel carried Scuderia Ferrari to the top of the time sheets on Friday as Formula 1 pre-season testing came to an end in Barcelona.

Ferrari have been the quickest in five of the eight days of testing this year with the German completing his fastest lap of 1m22.852s in the morning on Supersoft tyres, and covered a total of 142 laps. He finished ahead of the Scuderia Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz who set his best time of 1m23.134s, and becoming the only driver in the top five on the day to set a quickest lap on the new Ultrasoft tyres.

Williams Martini Racing driver Felipe Massa was only 0.510s behind Sainz in third, completing a total of 129 laps for the team. Sergio Perez caused the second red flag of the day when his VJM09 stopped at Turn 11, one hour into the afternoon, but the Sahara Force India still managed to set a fastest lap time to finish the session fourth.

Mercedes AMG PETRONAS split the driving duties between their 2016 drivers once more with Lewis Hamilton wrapping up his pre-season testing in the morning. His best time of 1m24.133s was set on the medium compound but for the first time during testing, a transmission problem saw the W07 stop on track.

Daniel Ricciardo set his fastest lap on the soft compound leading him to finish the session with 123 laps behind him. The Red Bull Racing driver finished ahead of the McLaren-Honda of Jenson Button in seventh by only 0.287s, with his best lap time set on the Ultrasofts.

After completing 90 laps Jolyon Palmer set a lap time of 1m24.859s to finish for Renault in eighth ahead of the Sauber of Marcus Ericsson, who completed 132 laps of his own.

Following problems Esteban Gutierrez suffered earlier in the week for Haas, the team decided to split the driver duties between the Mexican and Romain Grosjean. The Frenchmen ran for Haas in the morning and early afternoon, setting a tenth fastest time just ahead of his team-mate.  With an hour left, Gutierrez took over from Grosjean and completed 25 laps, ending up 0.167s slower.

Due to a mechanical problem in the morning, Manor Racing had a short day of running than originally planned, with just one installation lap in the morning. In the afternoon, it was more productive for Rio Haryanto and he finished the session completing 57 laps.

Nico Rosberg drove the W07 in the afternoon for Mercedes and finished the session the slowest with a time of 1m26.140s. The German completed only one more lap than British team-mate Hamilton with a total of 70 laps.
