René Rast Joins G-Drive in WEC LMP2 class

1 Mins read

Audi factory driver René Rast has completed G-Drive Racing’s LMP2 lineup for the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The German driver will team with Roman Rusinov and Nathanael Berthon for the full nine-round season, driving an Oreca 05-Nissan.

Rast is one of Audi’s most successful sportscar drivers in recent years, having chalked up victories at the Nurburgring 24 Hours and Spa 24 Hours. He made his Le Mans debut in 2014 with Sebastien Loeb Racing before finishing 7th overall with the Audi LMP1 squad 12 months later.

“I am super happy to be joining G-Drive Racing in LMP2 this season,” said Rast. “The ingredients, including the team, the proven chassis and engine, and my team mates gives me a lot of confidence entering the program this year.”

“An LMP2 car was the first prototype I drove back in 2014 and I am very much enjoying reacquainting myself with the category. This year looks like it will be a special one for the class, so I am personally very much looking forward to the challenge ahead. I would specifically like to thank Audi Sport and Pole Promotion for their support with this opportunity.”

“Anyone who has followed René’s career knows that he is an incredibly talented and professional racing driver,” added G-Drive team principal Sam Hignett. “His CV is very impressive and stands up with the best in the endurance racing business. I am delighted to welcome René to the team. He completes what we believe is a very strong squad of drivers in the G-Drive ORECA 05-Nissan. We have a great balance of speed, experience and desire to be very competitive in this year’s championship”

In 2016 G-Drive Racing will run a dual program with Jota Sport, with one entry in the WEC and another in the ELMS. Both crews will come together for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.
