Silverstone WEC: Porsche leads again, but drama for #2

1 Mins read

Second practice for the Silverstone round of the FIA World Endurance Championship once again saw at the Porsche front, but the session did not pass without its share of drama.

With half an hour still to go, the #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid was spotted crawling with Marc Lieb behind the wheel, although the problem was not disclosed by the team.

However, the #1 car would not endure such hardship as Brendon Hartley (sharing with Mark Webber and Timo Bernhard) set the quickest time of the afternoon.

The Kiwi’s 1:39.665 marker put the world champions 1.689s ahead of the sister car, which ran well before encountering its issue.

Audi came closest to breaking the Porsche stronghold, but the #8 R18 of Oliver Jarvis, Lucas di Grassi and Loic Duval fell one tenth short of the slower 919.

Toyota ended the day with a 1:41.523 lap coming courtesy of the #6 TS050, while the second Audi rounded out the top five.

Strakka Racing delivered the fastest LMP2 lap of the event so far as Jonny Kane leapt to a 1:49.632, putting the British team in good stead for its home race.

The #42 Gibson 015S ended the day six hundredths of a second faster than the #44 Manor Oreca 05, while Signatech Alpine and the second Manor car followed closely.

GTE-Pro was topped by the two AF Corse Ferrari 488 Italias which benefited from the dryer track, while in GTE-Am the Gulf Racing Porsche 911 RSR planted itself at the top of the leaderboard despite having an off-track moment towards the end.

The FIA WEC teams will reconvene for an early morning shakedown at 9:00 tomorrow (April 16).

Qualifying for Sunday’s race is set to take place later in the day at 11:50 (both times local)
