Ocon to participate in Spanish GP practice

1 Mins read

Esteban Ocon will take part in the opening free practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, the young Frenchman has announced on his offical Twitter account.

The Renault Sport F1 reserve driver will drive in his second official Formula 1 session, having participated with the Enstone-based team in opening practice during the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the team’s former incarnation of the Lotus F1 Team.

It is not clear which driver will step out of their car at the Circuit de Catalunya, but with Kevin Magnussen having given way at the Sochi Autodrom last weekend to allow Sergey Sirotkin take part in first practice, the chances are that Jolyon Palmer will be asked to skip opening practice in Spain to allow Ocon his chance.

Mercedes protégé Ocon joined the team on loan for 2016 as the reserve driver, with the 2015 GP3 Series champion and 2014 European Formula 3 champion running in the DTM Series in 2016 alongside his F1 commitments.
