Sebastian Vettel quickest on opening day of F1 test in Barcelona

Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was the quickest on the opening day of Formula 1 in-season testing at the Circuit de Catalunya on Tuesday.

Vettel set a lap time of 1m 23.220s to finish the test ahead of Nico Rosberg. For much of the day, the Maranello-based outfit focused on qualifying simulations with soft tyres as they looked to recreate conditions from the weekend. Rosberg set a lap time for Mercedes AMG PETRONAS that was only 0.117s down on Vettel.

Jenson Button showed promise as he topped the times in the morning session with a lap time of 1m 23.753s, this remained his fastest lap for the day.

Romain Grosjean improved on his morning session to go fourth fastest for Haas F1 Team on the ultrasoft Pirelli tyres. Manor Racing driver Pascal Wehrlein finished fifth fastest after improving on his morning session time.

Daniel Ricciardo continued to put good mileage on Red Bull Racing‘s upgraded Tag Heuer-badged Renault engine when he set a sixth fastest lap time to finish ahead of the sister Scuderia Toro Rosso team. Pierre Gasly managed to set a faster lap time than the morning session to finish seventh.

Sahara Force India‘s Alfonso Celis Jr improved on his morning session time on the super soft compound. Williams Martini Racing continued to test the double decker rear wing arrangement in the final runs of the day with Alex Lynn finishing the session in ninth ahead of the Renault Sport of Esteban Ocon.
