Fernando Alonso struggled with tyre degradation and ultimately finished in 12th place and outside the points for McLaren at the German Grand Prix, feeling the race was amongst his toughest of the season.

“It was a very tough race, possibly one of the toughest so far this season, especially towards the end, when my tyres were finished and I had to do a lot of fuel-saving.

“We knew before we came here that it might be a tough weekend. Ultimately, I lost 10th position at the end of the race, so we didn’t score that last point that we were hoping for. But we just didn’t have the pace throughout the entire race.”

Alonso was disappointed to finish outside the points considering his teammate managed to finish in eighth place but the Spanish driver conceded that the Honda-powered car did not have the race pace to compete for a points finish.

With a long summer break coming up, Alonso and McLaren will switch their attention firmly towards the Belgian Grand Prix and whether they can keep developing the car to compete with Force India and Williams.

“Getting ready for the Belgian Grand Prix is our priority now – hopefully we’ll come back stronger after the summer break.”
