Hamilton tops FP1 timesheets ahead of Rosberg

Lewis Hamilton topped the first practice session of the weekend at the Hungaroring, two tenths of a second ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg as the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS duo dominated.

With a number of drivers testing the circuit’s run off areas due mainly to a new track surface, Hamilton finished the session with a time of 1:21.347 on the Supersoft compound, with Rosberg closely behind also on the Supersoft compound for Mercedes.

Sebastian Vettel finished the session in third for Scuderia Ferrari ahead of team-mate Kimi Raikkonen by only 0.091 seconds.

Daniel Ricciardo completed the top five for Red Bull Racing with a time of 1:23.174, completing the session ahead of his team-mate Max Verstappen. McLaren-Honda had a good session after both drivers finished within the top ten. With Fernando Alonso setting a time of 1:23.935, only 0.026 seconds ahead of team-mate Jenson Button, although both spun during the session at turn five.

Romain Grosjean completed a good practice session for Haas F1 Team as he finished the session in ninth. With a time of 1:24.013 ahead of the first Sahara Force India of Sergio Perez. The Mexican completed the top ten with team-mate Nico Hulkenberg only 0.047 seconds behind in eleventh.

Felipe Massa finished ahead of his Williams Martini Racing team-mate Valtteri Bottas by only two tenths of a second, with the first Scuderia Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz Jr behind in fourteenth. Marcus Ericsson finished the session for Sauber in fifteenth ahead of Charles Leclerc.

The current GP3 Series leader participated in place of Esteban Gutierrez in his second FP1 session for Haas. He completed the session with a time of 1:25.181 and finished in sixteenth, 1.2 seconds behind Grosjean. Felipe Nasr finished his session in the second Sauber with a fastest lap time of 1:25.256 ahead of Esteban Ocon.

Ocon participated in FP1 in place of Kevin Magnussen for Renault Sport F1 and finished the session with a fastest lap time of 1:25.260. Behind the Frenchman was Daniil Kvyat for Toro Rosso with a time of 1:25.324 to finish in nineteenth ahead of Rio Haryanto. The Manor Racing driver finished the session with a time of 1:27.012 only 0.237 ahead of team-mate Pascal Wehrlein.

The only driver to finish the session behind the Manor duo was Jolyon Palmer as the Brit spent much of the session in the garage, only managing just a handful of laps, finishing the session with a fastest lap time of 1:28.560.
