A brilliant drive from Jenson Button gave McLaren-Honda some much needed points in the fight for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

The German Grand Prix would not be McLaren strongest race but Button drove brilliantly to secure four valuable points.

“I made a very good start and made up most of the places there,” said Button.  “After that, it was just about looking after the tyres, which were degrading faster than we’d expected. We also had to do a fair amount of fuel-saving, too, particularly in the last 10 laps”.

Button drove superbly to finish eighth ahead of the Williams’ and Sergio Perez in the Force India. The 2009 World Champion was pleased to beat both Williams drivers but still believes the team have a lot of work to do to catch the top teams.

“At the end, I was able to pick off Valtteri, who was struggling on his tyres. It feels satisfying to have beaten both Williams, but eighth was as good as it was going to get today – we were 20 seconds behind the car in front, and there’s still quite a bit to go before we catch those guys”.

McLaren have made huge gains since the start of the season, Button praises the work the team to help fight for points.

“Still, we’ve made good progress: we’re consistently fighting in the points, and the team are doing a great job this year, bringing something new to pretty much every single race. I want to say thank-you and well done to the whole team for their efforts”.
