Haas F1 Team driver Esteban Gutierrez was disappointed with thirteenth place after a brilliant qualifying, with the Mexican having a terrible start that dropped him down the grid but he managed to recover some ground.

“It was a very disappointing start to the race losing a lot of positions. It was very tough to recover, but I did my best.”

Gutierrez has failed to score a single point this season, but with a brilliant tenth place in qualifying it looked like a turning point but a slow start left him languishing down the field.

The Mexican struggled in the race, but with Monza promoting overtaking it was easier to pass slower cars. The poor start left him struggling on scrubbed tyres which limited his progress but the VF-16 showed solid pace.

“I struggled in the first stint with the overall pace, starting with the scrubbed tyres from qualifying and fighting with people which were on new tyres. It wasn’t very easy, but we kept ourselves together and pushed really hard to recover everything we could, but what we lost in the beginning was too much to get back to where we started.

“We’ll look ahead to Singapore and we’ll be focusing on that to come back stronger.”
