Max Verstappen finished the opening day of practice for the Singapore Grand Prix in third for Red Bull Racing.

The Dane had a good morning session around the Marina Bay Street Circuit as he topped the time sheets with a time of 1:45.823, 0.049 seconds ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, leading to a one-two finish for the Milton Keynes-based outfit, while in Free Practice 2, Verstappen finished in third, again ahead of Ricciardo, finishing the session with a time of 1:44.532.

After practice today, Verstappen believes it will be an interesting battle between Red Bull, Mercedes AMG PETRONAS and Scuderia Ferrari this weekend, with all three teams close together in pace so far.

“It was a positive day for us,” said Verstappen. “We can be happy with the balance of the car.

“For FP2 we weren’t fully there but we know what areas we need to work on and improve. But the car felt good, we are more or less there and we had a good start to the weekend.

“The tyres worked really well as well, I was happy with the ultrasofts, there was quite a difference between them and the supersofts. I think it will be an interesting battle between us, Mercedes and Ferrari, and I’m looking forward to it.”
