No decision has yet been made regarding who will partner Carlos Sainz Jr within the Scuderia Toro Rosso team, according to team principal Franz Tost.

Daniil Kvyat is currently in the second seat at the Faenza-based squad, but the impressive GP2 Series form from Pierre Gasly has made the decision to who will race in 2017 a difficult one for Red Bull bosses.

Gasly currently sits on top of the championship standings with just two rounds to go in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi, and has three Feature race victories to his name at Silverstone, the Hockenheimring and Spa-Francorchamps.

Kvyat on the other hand has endured a tough 2016 season, with an early demotion from Red Bull Racing back to Toro Rosso in favour of Max Verstappen coupled with just two tenth place finishes in the ten races since at the Circuit de Catalunya and Silverstone.

“No decision has been made yet from Red Bull’s side,” said Tost to Motorsport.com. “I don’t expect any decision before the end of September, or October.”

Asked if there was any chance that the Frenchman could race this year he added: “I don’t know. It’s not been discussed, nothing’s been decided. In theory, anything is possible.

“He did a good job in Spa. In Monza he was unlucky with the safety car, because he was in front, and in the sprint race he was also quite competitive. He’s put himself in a good position, the rest we will see.”
