Esteban Gutierrez: “It’s been a very nice experience”

Esteban Gutierrez is looking forward to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend, his final event for the Haas F1 Team.

The Mexican had a disappointing Brazilian Grand Prix, after he retired due to an electrical problem that affected his brakes. During the Grand Prix at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace Gutierrez felt finishing in the points was possible, but with these problems he was unable to see the chequered flag.

Being with Haas this season has been a nice experience for Gutierrez, not only has it been a challenging time for him, the team have had their moments.

“It’s been a very nice experience, but with a lot of challenges,” said Gutierrez. “There were some very difficult days for the mechanics.”

“Working day and night for quite a lot of time, the engineers as well. Being a new team, you don’t have a lot of people that you can really rotate, so it was quite a challenge for everybody, but also for myself.”

Despite the Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit starting in the late afternoon and ending in the night, for Gutierrez the track doesn’t change that much. With temperatures more stable, tyres are able to work better.

“Once you are into the race, it doesn’t really change much,” added Gutierrez. “It changes a lot after three or four o’clock and the sun starts to go down.

“By the time the race starts it’s already on a very good level. Everything is more stable. The temperatures are more stable, the tyres are working better and, usually, you can manage them better by not overheating them.”
