Red Bull Global Rallycross star Patrik Sandell got his 2017 season off to a winning start by claiming victory at Rally Sweden Historic over the weekend.
The three-time race winner was competing in the two-wheel-drive category alongside co-driver Bjorn Lindberg in a Mk. II Ford Escort that had been put together over the winter specifically for the event.
Sandell lost time at the start of the rally when his car stalled at the beginning of the opening two stages stages, but he was able to hold onto third overall as he headed to the first service.
By the end of the first day the 2006 Junior World Rally champion was in a commanding lead of the class, with second place more than a minute behind.
He would carry that lead through the second and final day of the event, scooping two-wheel-drive honours and finishing third overall.
“We won Rally Sweden Historic,” Sandell posted on social media following his win. “The atmosphere is something special!”
Sandell moves to the factory Subaru team this year, having spent his entire Red Bull GRC career to this point driving Fords. He made his series début with Olsbergs MSE in 2013 before moving to Bryan Herta Rallysport ahead of the 2015 season.
