Pietro Fittipaldi took his fourth World Series Formula V8 3.5 pole position in five races as he paced a wet-to-drying qualifying session around the Autodromo Nazionale Monza on Friday.
The Brazilian, twice a winner already this season, set the best time of the session late in the day of 1:34.808 to head the field for Lotus, although the session was brought to a premature close, with Rene Binder crashing on the exit of Parabolica and both Alfonso Celis Jr and Nelson Mason ending in the gravel trap.
Joining Fittipaldi on the front row will be RP Motorsport’s Roy Nissany, who was more than half a second down on the Brazilian, but more importantly 0.013 seconds clear of Binder to deny Lotus a front row lock-out.
Last week’s race two winner Matevos Isaakyan was the best placed of the SMP Racing by AVF drivers in fourth, with team-mate Egor Orudzhev sixth, either side of RP Motorsport’s Yu Kanamaru.
Championship leader Celis Jr could only manage seventh for Fortec Motorsports ahead of the leading rookie Damiano Fioravanti of RP Motorsport, while Konstantin Tereschenko and Diego Menchaca rounded out the top ten, separated by just 0.001 seconds, ahead of Mason and Giuseppe Cipriani.
