Pirelli Tyre warm-up issues need addressing – Grosjean

Romain Grosjean wants Pirelli to help make it easier to warm tyres up after many teams and drivers up and down the grid are struggling to do just that this year.

The Haas F1 Team driver struggled in Monaco with tyre warm up, especially after a period where the safety car was on track, but the Frenchman knows that he is not the only one encountering these issues, and he feels something needs to be done by Formula 1’s tyre supplier to help.

“We’re asking to get tyres with a better warm-up, be better after the Safety Car and to go faster,” said Grosjean. “We believe that the cars are able to go faster.

“I do believe that not a lot of people are 100 percent sure how to get there. It’s very tricky. It’s something we need to work on with Pirelli. We need to make it easier, as we’re spending so much time getting the tyres to work.

“It’s a bit frustrating not being able to work on car balance. Ideally, we’d like a wider window, and pretty much more in common between the compounds, so when you change compounds it doesn’t just fall off in the performance.”

Grosjean feels his team are progressing nicely in 2017 after they secured their first double points finish in their short history in Monaco, with the Frenchman eighth and Kevin Magnussen tenth, and he feels that with a little more luck, they could have scored more than the fourteen points they have so far this season.

“Last year we started very well, then we struggled a little bit more as we were preparing for 2017,” admitted Grosjean. “The car is very good. We’ve had a lot of chances to get into the points.

“We haven’t always had the luck we needed but, eventually, Monaco came. It was not maybe the place we expected to get both cars into the top-10, but we did it, and it shows that the team is now capable of finding the right set-up, the right strategy and going for it.

“It was a big achievement. I think it’s as big as our first Q3 appearance, or our first points, and I’m very happy with that.”
