Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver Valtteri Bottas was pleased the squad were able to achieve their first one-two finish of the season, at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, following the troubles they encountered in Monaco.
Having struggled to get the best performance out of the car on the streets of Monte Carlo, the Finn felt the German team answered the critics in the best way possible on Sunday, and proved just how focused they are at getting back on top in this championship.
“I’m so happy for us as a team to bounce back the way we did this weekend.
“It’s so impressive to see how the team has reacted in the last two weeks – how it’s worked and improved. I’ve never seen a group of people so determined to win and to get back on top, so to get the one-two finish today, it’s amazing.”
Bottas got a brilliant launch off the line to move ahead of Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, having started from third on the grid, but a small lock up saw the Finn lose his attained second place to Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen, though he was back past the Dutchman before too long.
Despite losing time behind Sahara Force India F1 Team driver Esteban Ocon, and struggling for pace on the soft tyre, Bottas was able to manage his position perfectly to come home in second place.
“I tried my best to be aggressive and to get ahead of the Ferrari’s off the start and it worked, but I had a bit of a lock-up there which compromised my first stint.
“I lost some time behind the Red Bull and then the Force India after the stop, so we went for the soft tyre for the second stint, but I didn’t quite have the pace.
“But I brought the car home for some great points.”
