Stoffel Vandoorne hopes with their focus turned to fine-tuning the set-up, McLaren Honda Formula 1 Team can hopefully carry every ounce of it’s Friday performance through to Saturday for the Austrian Grand Prix.

The Belgian enjoyed one of his best Friday showings of the season, finishing Free Practice 1 in seventh, with a time of 1:07.283 to finish two places ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso. His pace was just as good in Free Practice 2, although he finished twelfth fastest, 0.127 seconds behind the Spaniard.

For the second session, positions seven to seventeen were covered by less than one second, meaning it will come down to minute details tomorrow if McLaren is to have a good result in qualifying.

“I think it’s been a reasonably good Friday for us as a team,” said Vandoorne. “We’re competing in a very, very close midfield.

“I think one second covered around 10 cars in FP2 this afternoon – so it will all come down to details tomorrow if we’re to have a good result in qualifying. It’s such a short track that a couple of hundredths’ difference can make a big difference in terms of grid position. We’ll focus on putting everything together and fine-tune the set-up so we can hopefully carry every ounce of performance through to tomorrow.”
