Christian Horner feels Pierre Gasly is deserving of the promotion from Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda to Aston Martin Red Bull Racing in 2019 after the Frenchman was announced as Max Verstappen’s team-mate in place of the departing Daniel Ricciardo.
Gasly made his Formula 1 debut in the Malaysian Grand Prix with Toro Rosso at the back end of 2017 and has scored twenty-six of the teams twenty-eight points this season, with a fourth place in Bahrain and sixth place in Hungary the highlights.
And Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, says the Frenchman has shown himself to be considerably talented during his time in the Red Bull Junior Team, with whom he won the 2016 GP2 Series title, and during his time with Toro Rosso.
“Since Pierre first stepped into a Formula One seat with Scuderia Toro Rosso less than a year ago he has proved the undoubted talent that Red Bull has nurtured since his early career,” said Horner.
“His stellar performances this year at the Honda-powered team, in only his first full season in Formula One, have only enhanced his reputation as one of the most exciting young drivers in motorsport and we look forward to Pierre bringing his speed, skill and attitude to the team in 2019.”
Horner says that Red Bull’s current focus remains firmly on getting the best results possible in the final nine races of their relationship with Renault before they make the switch to Honda, but he is excited to see what Gasly and Verstappen can do with the RB15 next season.
“While our immediate focus remains fully on achieving our best result in the 2018 World Championship, we look forward to competing in 2019 with Max and Pierre at the wheel of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing,” said Horner.
