Ammermüller secures Supercup pole position at Monza

by Vince Pettit

Championship leader Michael Ammermüller secured top spot in qualifying for round eight of ten of the 2018 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup as the Formula 1 supporting series headed to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.

The German set a time of 1:49.551 to claim pole position and finished the session 0.136 seconds ahead of BWT Lechner Racing team-mate Thomas Preining.

With mixed weather conditions leading up to qualifying, the earlier rain had made way for sunshine, pushing track temperatures back up to 19 degrees Celsius.

Preining set the pace in the opening moments of the session before local favourite Mattia Drudi put the Austrian in his place by improving on his time twice.

As the clock counted down all thirty-one drivers switched to a fresh set of tyres with eight minutes of the session remaining.

With times starting to tumble Drudi lapped faster, but this would only stand briefly as Ammermüller blitzed his time to take pole position and Preining improved to second place.

“Because of the rain on Friday, we took very little data from free practice into the qualifying. I’m pleased with pole position, particularly since the first corner is really tight. The further up the field you are, the less risk there is of a collision,” said Ammermüller.

Team-mate Preining heads in to this race weekend sixteen points down on the championship lead, with a possible sixty points left to score from tomorrow’s race and the double-header in Mexico City.

“I have nothing to lose in the championship and I’ll put on some serious pressure to get ahead in the race. Second on the grid is a perfect starting position to do this,” said Preining.

While knocked down to third place, Drudi is still hopeful of a chance to taste victory in front of his home crowd as he lines up third on the grid. “Recently I’ve performed better in the race than in qualifying. That makes me optimistic. To win at Monza would be a dream come true,” said Drudi.

Zaid Ashkanani claimed fourth place ahead of championship challenger Nick Yelloly who will start from the third row alongside rookie Florian Latorre.

Larry ten Voorde lines up seventh ahead of Jaap van Lagen, Mikkel O. Pedersen, and Al Faisal Al Zubair.

In Pro-Am it was Roar Lindland who was fastest as he prepares to battle with Nicolas Misslin again for the class championship honours.
