Carlos Sainz Jr. is looking forward to the rest of the weekend after a strong showing from Renault Sport Formula One Team in Friday practice ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was third fastest in both Free Practice 1 and 2 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and Sainz described the result as “a great feeling” but admits it counts for nothing yet.

“It’s always a great feeling to take to the track in Mexico and that feeling is even better if your lap times look good relative to the opposition, even though the third places just have a symbolic value!”

Renault completed the two sessions without any issues and Sainz was pleased with a “good” Friday.

“It was a good Friday in general, with some testing in the morning and a strong programme in the afternoon that we managed to complete without any issues.”

Renault are still in a fight with Haas F1 Team for fourth place in the constructors championship and understanding the tyres could be the key to a strong weekend as they aim to increase their gap to the American outfit.

“Tyre understanding and management will be crucial for Sunday, so that is one of the main things to analyse.

“We are looking forward to tomorrow.”
