Swedish karting star Lucas Petersson has become the latest edition to the BRDC British F3 Championship joining the Carlin team for the 2019 season.
He becomes the first driver to be officially signed for 2019.
Petersson will make a return to Europe having previously raced in the F4 UAE Championship, where he made his single-seater debut last winter. During his time in the Middle East, he recorded five podiums, which included two wins and finished fourth in the standings after an early title challenge.
The UAE series has quickly become a popular destination for young European drivers to ply their trade during the winter, with last years runner-up David Schumacher going on to claim the German F4 rookie title.
“I’m really looking forward to racing in a championship and country that has such a rich heritage in motorsport.” said Petersson.
“Being a young driver, I’ve always aspired to take part in this championship and to do it with such as successful team like Carlin is very humbling. I have no expectations apart from giving it all I’ve got.”
On top of his recent single-seater experience, Petersson has picked up great karting success, picking up the Junior Rotax title in 2017. At 17-years-old, he’ll hope to follow in the footsteps of 2018’s BRDC F3 champion, fellow countryman Linus Lundqvist.
Team Principal Trevor Carlin added: “We are pleased to welcome Lucas to the team for upcoming 2019 season. Lucas has already been testing with us and has made a good impression on the team. He’s already had good results in other championships he’s competed in so we’re looking forward to seeing what he can achieve in the BRDC British Formula Three Championship when it all kicks off again in April.”
Carlin, along with five other outfits were testing at Silverstone recently, with Manuel Maldonado, Clement Novalak and Kaylen Frederick testing for the team. Only three cars will be available for them next season.
