It froze on during the night between Thursday and Friday and when Rally Sweden got underway on Friday morning, and it was the Welshman Elfyn Evans who suited the conditions the best, he won the first stage and was then able to control the rally from the front.
However, after the focus on the lack of snow and ice, and during Friday night the organisers, promoter and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) met to talk about the future of the rally.
Behind the scenes, discussions continue on what will happen with the rally in the future. Rally Sweden is supposed to be an ice and snow rally. And while many want to live greener, rallying is one of those events where greenery is a problem.
“We will talk about the coming years, already we will discuss how we will think next year” Glenn Olsson, Rally Sweden CEO, said.
There is no obvious plan for how it can be a more snow-safe rally. The threat is that there are other organizers who knock on the FIA’s door and want to offer a winter rally, but there are many pieces that will fall into place for the WRC puzzle to fit together. Yesterday’s meeting will hardly lead to drastic decisions.
