Ott Tänak says you need to drive in a “smooth and flowing way” on Rally Mexico.

The defending FIA World Rally Champion competes on his first fully gravel event with Hyundai Motorsport next weekend and the Estonian has spoke of how to succeed on the North American event.

Talking earlier this week, Tänak said: “There’s nowhere better than Mexico to come and get some sunny weather after the winter. Physically, it can be tough. At altitude we don’t have as much oxygen, so our driving style needs to be smooth and flowing, while the engine power is reduced, so we have to be efficient.”

“I was pleased to get my first podium with Hyundai Motorsport in Sweden, but Mexico will be very different – it’s a unique challenge. The heat and altitude make it a very specific event on the calendar. On the fan side, too, it’s amazing; we have a lot of people spectating and going crazy which makes it very special and emotional for us as drivers.”

Tänak could also take advantage of a more favourable road position than some of his rivals in the championship including leader Elfyn Evans and teammate Thierry Neuville as he lies sixth in the standings following his retirement on the opening round of the season on Rallye Monte Carlo.

Rally Mexico, the third round of the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship, takes place next weekend between March 12-15.
