The entry list for rounds three and four of the 2020 FIA World Rallycross Championship has now been released, as the championship gears up to return to Kouvola and the Tykkimäki circuit.
Capitalbox World RX of Finland was added to the revised 2020 calendar as a replacement for the cancelled French round of the championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
19 drivers are entered for the weekend, with five home heroes set to compete on their home event. Many of the drivers have raced at Kouvola due to the track playing host to the FIA European Rallycross Championship in the past.
It also featured in the first season of WRX, where American rallycross legend Tanner Foust took the win back in 2014.
Headlining the entry list is the Finnish driver Niclas Grönholm, who made his only appearance at the circuit in a one-off appearance in the RX Lites (now RX2) back in 2014, with teammate Timur Timerzyanov also confirmed alongside him.
Joining the pair in the third Hyundai i20 under the GRX Set banner is Finnish 2018 Autokrossi and 2019 Supercar champion Juha Rytkönen. He made his Supercar debut at the track back in 2018 in the RallyX Nordic series as he claimed the Autokrossi honors and reached the semi-final on his first appearance.
Euro RX regular Jere Kalliokoski, who also contested some World RX events last year, is another Finn that is looking to impress in their home event. He is entered with the ex-STARD Ford Fiesta.
Another Finn entered is multiple Finnish Supercar champion Atro Määttä, who was another driver who competed in the first World event at the track in 2014. Former WRC driver Jani Paasonen is also set to compete, and is entering with his brand-new Ferratum squad.
Former double champion Johan Kristofferson is also on the entry list, although hasn’t competed at the track in the past, while Hungarian driver Tamaś Kárai is set to make his first World Championship appearance of the season with his all-new Audi S1.
Reigning Euro RX champion Robin Larsson had huge success at Kouvola last year when he won the RallyX Nordic event and team mate Janis Baumanis will be looking to gain experience from his teammate as has only raced in front-wheel-drive Super 1600 machinery at the Finnish circuit in the past.
Reigning World RX champion Timmy Hansen made his Supercar debut at Kouvola back in 2014, although will be hoping for better luck than his first appearance when he rolled his Peugeot after contact with coincidentally his main championship rival from last year Andreas Bakkerud. Brother Kevin Hansen took his maiden RX Lites victory at Kouvola in 2014.
Bakkerud’s team mate Liam Doran still thinks Kouvola is his all-time favourite rallycross circuit, and has had huge success there in the Euro RX era of the championship.
The entry list is completed by Guerlain Chicherit, Rokas Baciuska, Anton Marklund and All-inkl.com Münnich Motorsport duo Timo Scheider and René Münnich.
The World RX of Finland will take place on the weekend of 29/30 August and will take place behind closed doors due to coronavirus restrictions but stay tuned to The Checkered Flag for updates from the event.
