Sergio Pérez says he cannot wait forever for Aston Martin Red Bull Racing to make a decision on who will partner Max Verstappen in 2021, although he acknowledges joining the Milton Keynes-based team is an option.
Pérez will leave the BWT Racing Point Formula One Team at the end of the current campaign after the team announced that Sebastian Vettel will join Lance Stroll in the soon-to-be-renamed Aston Martin Racing squad.
However, there has been a lot of speculation over the future of Alexander Albon at Red Bull, with the Thai driver seemingly hanging onto his ride by a thread. Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner says the seat is Albon’s to lose, but his performances and results have not been that strong in recent races.
Both Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg have been linked to the seat in recent weeks, but the Mexican says he cannot wait too long for them to make up their mind as he needs to sort out his own future sooner rather than later.
“I think there is a very slim line in there you know,” Pérez is quoted as saying by Motorsport.com ahead of this weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. “There is a time where you [can] take the risk, wait, and then see what happens.
“But the season is coming to an end. So I think it’s important for teams to know what’s going on, what’s happening going forward and for drivers too. I’m looking at all my possible options and, yeah, I cannot take too long any more.
“I wouldn’t rule it out. I think at the moment until they’re not confirmed they are an option, you know. It is the same as every team that hasn’t confirmed. I think, as time is running, there are very, very few opportunities to remain on the grid for next year.”
