Reigning Ginetta Junior champion Tom Lebbon will move up to BRDC British Formula 3 with Elite Motorsport for 2021.

Lebbon won the Rookie and outright championships while in the British Touring Car Championship support series, but has made the move to the Intelligent Money British GT Championship paddock this season.

His triumphant season came with Elite Motorsport, who have themselves moved up to British F3 for 2021, replacing the outgoing Lanan Racing team.

Lebbon won five races outright in Ginetta Junior last season, as well as 13 Rookie class wins and 15 podiums in total.

The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC), affiliated with Ginetta Junior, awarded him the Peter Collins Trophy at the end of last year for his performances, recognising him as the most promising newcomer in a BARC series that year.

Lebbon is excited about the season ahead, telling britishf3.com: “My aim is to achieve a strong year in F3 while picking up some good finishes along the way.

“I want to use this year to learn and experience single-seater racing and develop my driving… I’ve only completed about five days in a F3 car, at Snetterton and Valencia, and testing has been pretty limited due to poor weather.

“I’ve a good bond with Elite and believe that they can compete at high level in British F3. They have won lots of races and championships and I believe they are a good choice despite Elite being new to the Formula 3 paddock.”

Elite Motorsport owner and manager, Eddie Ives, adds: “I’m absolutely delighted and excited to be announcing Tom in one of our British F3 cars. There are no better words to describe the season that he had in 2020 than ‘truly exceptional’ – a stunning performance.

“Moving up from Ginetta Juniors into a F3 single-seater is a big step for a driver so young and with just one year of car racing under his belt.

“But this is a two-year programme and I’m confident Tom will ultimately excel in the category.”

Elite have already announced the signing of Spanish Formula 4 graduate Javier Sagrera Pont for Britain’s premier single-seater series, and Lebbon will drive the second of a proposed three-car outfit after an extensive round of pre-season testing at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia late last year.

Once British F3’s newest team has announced their final driver for 2021, the season is set to get underway a little later than originally advertised. The first round is expected to be at Brands Hatch on 22/23 May, supporting the British GT Championship.
