Last Saturday, Doug Coby kicked off the Camping World SRX Series by beating the series’ full-timers on his home soil at Stafford Speedway. On Friday, his victory and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour successes were rewarded as GMS Racing announced he will drive the #24 Chevrolet Silverado in his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series début at Bristol Motor Speedway on 16 September.

The six-time Modified Tour champion opted to forgo his series’ race at Oswego last weekend to participate in the inaugural SRX event; while skipping the Modifieds dropped him down the standings, SRX provided him with the opportunity to represent the short track community in the national spotlight. The Stafford Speedway great was entered in a local star car and won the second heat before dominating the feature. GMS president Mike Beam served as his celebrity crew chief for the race.

“I’m really thankful to have the opportunity to drive for a winning team like GMS Racing at Bristol,” Coby stated. “My racing career has been filled with chance meetings where I come across someone who ends up opening another door for me, and last weekend’s SRX event at Stafford with Mike was another one of those cases. For Mike to leave the event and speak with (team owner) Maury Gallagher about putting me in one of their trucks at Bristol is phenomenal and I’m grateful for the opportunity to prove myself in the Camping World Truck Series. I’m really looking forward to working with all the guys on the #24 team at one of my favourite tracks.”

“One of the main goals Ray (Evernham) and his group had with the SRX series was to give these local short track guys like Coby a shot,” added Beam. “We’re blessed to have Maury’s support to put these local guys in a truck and give them a chance to compete at the national level in NASCAR.”

Coby, a real estate broker off the track who has thirty Modified wins to go with his six titles, raced at Bristol in his main series from 2011 to 2018. In eight starts at the Tennessee short track, he has four top fives with a best finish of second in 2017.

The announcement comes a day after GMS confirmed their intentions to begin racing in the Cup Series in 2022. The #24 is the team’s multi-driver truck with Raphaël Lessard beginning the year in it before being released due to sponsorship issues. Ryan Reed and Chase Elliott each made a start, while Jack Wood is running much of the remaining schedule.
