Mike Krack, team principal of Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team has described Sebastian Vettel‘s Qualifying Three performance as “confident, fast and solid” despite a near-miss in Qualifying Two when the German locked up and gently bumped into the wall, narrowly avoiding front wing damage.
At the other side of the Aston Martin garage, Lance Stroll‘s mechanics will be working late into the night on Saturday in order to repair the Canadian’s car after a similar incident occurred for Stroll, before a bigger incident saw him in the wall at Turn Two.
Despite the errors in qualifying, Krack believes the team is in a “strong position” to score points in the race on Sunday:
“Lance had a troubled Q1, first locking up, running wide and tapping the wall at Turn Seven, then hitting the Turn Two wall hard enough to end his run. But tomorrow is another day, and this is a circuit on which he has done very well in the past,” says Krack, referring to the podium that Stroll scored at Baku City Circuit in 2017.
“Sebastian was very good today – confident, fast, and solid apart from a light wall-tap at Turn 15 in Q2. He ended up in ninth, and is therefore in a strong position from which to drive for points tomorrow.”
Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix will determine whether Vettel can convert his third Qualifying Three appearance of the season into points, in an attempt to catch Haas F1 Team up in the constructors championship fight.
