Elfyn Evans who has been leading the 2022 Repco Rally Zealand on Saturday morning before teammate Kalle Rovanperä took over, has now been forced to retire from the rally completely as his Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 was found having roll cage damage after his off on Saturday morning.

The Welshman had a high-speed spin at the Puhoi test this morning when slid into a bank and damaged the car, he had to repair his radiator and manager to drive back to the service park where the Toyota Gazoo Racing team found out that he couldn´t continue as the car had been taken roll cage damage.

The team principal of Toyota, Jari-Matti Latvala confirmed that following an inspection by the team and the representatives from the FIA that the roll cage damage was discovered: “We have been investigating the car with the team and the FIA, and unfortunately we have noticed there is roll cage damage. We have to retire the car for the day.” Latvala commented.

“For today it’s over, but after the service we will have more time to investigate it and look at what could be done. We don’t know about Sunday yet. I know exactly how it feels – I have had the same thing in my own [driving] career. It’s not nice, but the most important thing is that Elfyn has proved he has the speed.”
