For the 2022 season, the new hybrid cars made their debut in the FIA World Rally Championship, with the new cars in the Rally1 class the three teams of Toyota Gazoo Racing, Hyundai Motorsport, and M-Sport Ford came with brand-new cars with most of them being from Ford who changed the model for 2022, from Fiesta to Puma.
A quick look among the manufacturers shows 29 cars produced for the first season. For the 2022 manufacturer champion Toyota, they have built 11 cars, three of which have then been pure test cars that have not been used in competition. The other eight chassis have rolled around the four drivers, where the cars have run six and seven rallies, evenly distributed.
The last four cars were selected for rally already in April to meet the tough calendar and have cars to alternate with between surfaces. The Finnish team has made 52 starts, all within the WRC where they had four cars in all 13 competitions.
There were fewer cars for Hyundai Motorsport, with nine chassis where two only went for tests. In July, the latest car was selected and here it is a large spread between how many rallies the cars have run, everything from just 1-2 starts to chassis number 4 which has run all 13 rallies this year. One of the cars is also scrapped after rolling in Finland and one was burned down in Japan. A total of 39 starts have been made with the car model during the season.
Like Hyundai, M-Sport Ford has taken nine cars out of the factory and here too, two have only been tested and not seen in competition. More similarities with Hyundai, even M-Sport has a car crashed which got scrapped. The latest Ford Puma was picked up in June and has only run three rallies, while the ones that have been used the most have run 11 starts, the team is also the one that has made the most starts with private drivers and rallies outside the WRC. A total of 54 starts have been made with the car model over 15 rallies with two of them outside of the WRC.
