The two governing bodies FIA and ACO have now agreed to remove the LMP2 prototype class from the FIA World Endurance Championship come 2024 as the new Hypercar class is increasing in popularity.
Next season three additional manufacturers of Alpine, BMW, and Lamborghini will join the grid, plus the Isotta Fraschini machine which is expected to join later this year which will make the Hyperclass consist of around 20 entries, but also the current LM GTE-AM class will be replaced by the GT3 spec cars in the new LMGT3 class which could see a huge entry since it is currently the most popular sportscar class in the world.
However, while the LMP2 machines are not eligible to run in the WEC, the governing bodies have agreed to have 15 entry slots available for the cars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the LMP2 cars that are racing in the European Le Mans Series, Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.
This means also that all of the categories introduced for the inaugural WEC season in 2012 have now been axed. For the 2024 season, it will be the first time the championship will only be running two full-season categories.
The current LMP2 cars have been used since the 2017 season when the new generation was introduced with only four chassis builders to be allowed to supply. Those were Oreca, Ligier, Multimatic/Riley, and Dallara. Out of those four the most popular car is now Oreca and since 2021 has been the sole chassis seen in the WEC´s LMP2 field. A new generation of LMP2 cars is expected to come in a few years for the other series.
