A charge from Jonny Adam in the second half of the race – aided by a penalty for an unlucky RJN Motorsport crew – gave the new GT3-spec Aston Martin Vantage its first race win as Beechdean Motorsport won the first Avon Tyres British GT Championship race of the Nurburgring 24 Hours weekend.
Jann Mardenborough and Nick Tandy took one pole position apiece for RJN Motorsport and Motorbase Performance at the Nurburgring ahead of the two hour long races this weekend.
The twin practice sessions for the Avon Tyres British GT Championship were largely Porsche dominated affairs as 997 GT3 R topped both of the hours session and all five examples finished the second session inside the top ten.
With the dreadful weather still as bad as it had been for race two earlier in the day, JMH had decided to pull their Nissan GT-R out of race three after their earlier victory rather than risk an off and damage whilst spares for the new car were still short supply and with one eye on their upcoming British GT race at the Nurburgring. This promoted the group two Porsche 997 of Nick Whale to pole position thanks to Harry Whale’s second fastest lap (behind the Nissan’s fastest) in race two.
Race Two of the GT Cup at Donington was to take place in dreadful conditions thanks to heavy rain and strong winds. However it was left to Benji Hetherington who conquered all to take the first ever victory for the JMH Automotive team’s Nissan GT-R
The 2012 GT Cup season got under way at Donington Park with race one of the three race weekend taking place on Saturday in cold but dry conditions. Despite a few absentee’s, including the McLaren MP4-12C of Jim Geddie due to a parts supply issue, the 16 cars on track provided great entertainment.
