TCF BTCC Fans Top 10 Drivers ’00-’09: Number 7

1 Mins read

Seventh place overall went to Mr BTCC.net Fans Trophy winner of 2009. This driver had to leave the BTCC at the end of 2003 due to being diagnosed with Diabetes but made a hugely popular and successful full time return in 2009, in the aging but potent Sunshine.co.uk Honda Integra. He is the half brother of Spice Girl Mel C; His nickname is Owy – its Paul O'Neill. O’Neill received 25 votes for his 7th place.

After his 3rd place in the first race at Snetterton in 2009, the first for the Sunshine.co.uk team, O’Neillburst into tears on the podium, simply because of all the support he had received while he battled to get back on track.

Snetterton was not the first time he had tears, in 2002, when he raced for the Egg: Sport team, O’Neill burst into tears after taking his maiden win in the BTCC at Oulton Park in the feature race. He would then take his second career win in 2003, for the outright VXR Team, this victory came at Snetterton, where he led home a VXR 1, 2, 3.

O’Neill's return to the BTCC came at Brands Hatch in 2006, driving the bio-ethanol powered Vauxhall Astra Coupe of Fiona Leggate. Silverstone, in the season finale saw him lead for a few laps, and 2007, Thruxton was graced with the presence of the Widnes racer.

O’Neill will be back for 2010 and is looking for wins and podiums in the Honda Integra.
