TCF BTCC Fans Top 10 Drivers ’00-’09: Number 9

1 Mins read

9th place is a guy who has the record for being the youngest driver to take a race win, an overall podium, and he made his debut aged 16, and remarkably 2009 was his 8th season. Renowned for his rather spiky, blonde hair and very bubbly personality, its Sonic, otherwise known as Tom Chilton.

Chilton recieved 19 votes to take his place just inside the top 10. In only his second race for Barwell Motorsport, the team Tom made his debut for in 2002, Tom would make history by being the youngest ever podium finisher, by taking third place overall. This was the second piece of history Tom made at Brands Hatch, he also took the record of being the youngest ever BTCC driver.

Tom has had two spells as a works driver, in 2003 he joined the works Honda squad, and in 2004 joined the Arena Motorsport team in their Honda Civic Type R. 2004 saw Tom take another record, as he took his first BTCC win at Silverstone, thus becoming the youngest race winner. Tom backed this win up with his second win of the season at Donington Park, in the 29th round. 2005 saw Tom miss the Donington Park and Brands GP Rounds due to other commitments, but by the end of the season had taken 4 victories and 5th overall in the standings.

The 2005 performance saw Vauxhall come calling where Tom would have 2 winless years before joining Team Halfords alongside Gordon Shedden in 2008. The 3 year win drought ended in the final race of the 2008 season as he took the chequered flag at Brands Hatch.

2009 saw Tom take on a whole new challenge. He rejoined Arena Motorsport and helped develop the all new for 2009 Ford Focus ST, under the Team AON banner. The season started badly, but by the end of the season, Tom had taken 3 podium finishes and a pole position. The car is looking good for 2010.
