Proton Gen-2
Welch Motorsport, familiar for running SEATs in a variety of championships, including the Eurocup and Britcar competition brought one of the more surprising NGTC packages to the grid when they debut the Proton at Snetterton.
The car was barely even completed in time, but Welch still piloted the car to three finishes on its debut weekend. The season ended at Silverstone, Welch passing an important milestone by picking up a first BTCC point for tenth place in the second race at the Northants track.
True to form the Welch team were late completing the rebuild of the car for the start of the season, severely limiting testing mileage on the car – now in the purple of new partners sopp+sopp rather than the Marriott red it launched in.
The lack of testing, and the new breed of NGTC cars lining up against it may limit Welch's first full season to only brief forays into the points, but Welch has surprised before.
