Tale Of The Tape: Paffett VS Spengler

1 Mins read

We now approach the deciding moment of this season, as there are two combatants from rival teams and manufacturers, who are looking to become this year’s DTM Drivers’ Champion, with BMW Motorsport‘s outgoing champion, Martin Tomczyk relinquishing his crown after the second and final visit to Hockenheim this coming Sunday.

It’s not been easy for either driver this season, as they have had their fair share of ups and downs, with BMW’s Bruno Spengler having two DNFs in Hockenheim and Spielburg, with Mercedes-Benz’s Gary Paffett parking his AMG C-Class Coupe in Valencia.

The switch from Mercedes-Benz after 6 years to BMW Motorsport, provided Spengler with a new motivation and challenge, with wins coming from pole positions at Lausitzring, Oschersleben and Nurburgring, on what has been a fairytale story for the Canadian driver and the Munich manufacturer.

He has been close twice to winning the DTM title on 2007 and 2010, but it could be a real possibility, depending on what happens in qualifying, as it could work in his favour. But Paffett is not one to step back from a challenge, especially as the first race saw both him and team-mate Jamie Green pick up a 1-2 finish at the very beginning of the season, as well as a well-deserved win on home soil at Brands Hatch in May.

Even though these two are in the home stretch to become the Champion, Green is waiting in the wings to capitalise if both drivers fail to finish at Hockenheim, and could take the title for himself.

Anything can happen when it goes down to the wire, so hold on to your hats, as irrespective of who wins the war, we will see a new Champion crowned come Sunday, as the others look to make good their efforts for next season.

Will it be Paffett or Spengler? Will it be England or Canada? 42 laps on Sunday will decide just who will be wearing the Number 1 in 2013…
