ES Racing boss Chris James was impressed by the performance of namesake Chris Knox today as the Scot enjoyed his first taste of touring car action.
Knox, 2011 Mini Challenge Champion, tested for the race-winning outfit at Silverstone today (Thursday, November 15) and despite mixed conditions left a positive mark on the team.
James, whose outfit won twice in 2012 with another Scot, Dave Newsham, said Knox showed good pace and a level head given the circumstances.
“God, he was very impressive, for his first time in a touring car,” he raved. “Mixed conditions, but he didn’t look under pressure or that he was going to lose the car at any point, he was driving well within himself. And then at the end of the day, I thought it was too wet, and he just went for it and set a very, very fast time in those conditions.”
The 2012 pairing of James and Newsham may not reappear for next season with the Scot trying to get the money together for an NGTC drive, and the team boss says Knox’s test could well lead to a full-time drive – but only if the right deal can be struck.
“It’s a test to get him in the car, and he’s happy with it, and then it’s about his drive and determination to be in British touring cars,” he said. “If he is, sure it might not be with us, but it’s all down to money – he needs to keep in touch with his sponsors and try and get the support he needs out of them.”
