9 – Nye denies Hill and Wood in Croft S2000 thriller
The new-for-2013 Jack Sears Trophy made just for Super-2000 specification machines produced some fantastic racing during the season as a sideshow to the NGTC fight for overall spoils.
Among the best battles was a superb scrap for the S2000 class victory during the fifth meeting at Croft, David Nye, Lea Wood and rookie Jake Hill all embroiled in a great fight for victory in the changeable conditions at the North Yorkshire venue.
After Hill had brilliantly won on his BTCC debut in race one driving the Addison Lee Motorbase Ford Focus, he and Wood found themselves behind Welch Motorsport’s Nye in race two. They then proceeded to give the crowd a fantastic fight for the second Cup of the day, hunting for a way around what became the widest Ford Focus in BTCC history.
Nye rebuked every onslaught thrown at him by Hill and Wood, and for the final five laps the two Fords and Wood’s Vauxhall Vectra could barely allow for a piece of paper to come between them.
Nye survived relentless pressure from Hill to clinch his first Jack Sears Trophy success of the season, becoming the sixth different winner of what would be seven come the championship’s conclusion, the three drivers separated by less than half a second as they took the flag.
Behind Nye, second in class was nicked by the eventual overall Jack Sears Trophy winner, Wood, a better run exiting the final hairpin allowing him to snatch the place from Hill on the line.
