Lucas Auer took his third victory of the season as the FIA European Formula 3 Championship season came to a close at Hockenheim.
The Austrian, driving for Mücke Motorsport, was forced to battle hard for the win, after a tough battle with Tom Blomqvist of Jagonya Ayam with Carlin.
Blomqvist, who started on pole position, was unable to keep Auer behind him at the start, and made a mistake that let the Austrian driver get away, and then saw Carlin driver Jordan King make a surprise move at Spitzkehre on the penultimate lap to snatch second place away from his fellow Briton.
Blomqvist’s podium finish was enough for him to claim second place in the championship ahead of Max Verstappen, who could not climb higher than sixth in the season finale.
Behind the podium finishers, Felix Rosenqvist of Mücke Motorsport held off Antonio Giovinazzi for fourth, while Verstappen of Van Amersfoort Racing got the better of series champion Esteban Ocon in a closely fought battle after the two ran side by side at mid-distance as the Dutchman overtook the Frenchman.
Sean Galael had a lonely race to eighth for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, while Ed Jones claimed his first points of a disappointing weekend for Carlin after a battle with Gustavo Menezes and Roy Nissany.
Unfortunately for Van Amersfoort Racing’s Menezes he was handed a drive-through penalty for causing the initial race start to be aborted and then reassuming his grid spot for the restart, while Mücke Motorsport’s Nissany lost ground by running through the gravel trap.
Jake Dennis was also on course for his first points of the weekend for Carlin but despite fighthing through from the back of the grid after his penalty for an engine change, lost position to Dennis van de Laar of Prema Powerteam on the final lap.
The safety car was needed on the first lap after Tatiana Calderon of Jo Zeller Racing and Felix Serralles of Team West-Tec F3 collided, leaving both cars stranded in the middle of the track.
Antonio Fuoco did not make the start after breaking his thumb in his race-ending crash with Dennis at the end of race two on Saturday.
