Pascal Wehrlein Top As DTM Pre-Season Ends in Oschersleben

1 Mins read

Mercedes AMG driver Pascal Wehrlein topped the final pre season test day for the DTM yesterday at Oschersleben, with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One reserve driver setting a lap of 1:19.952 in the first session of the day.

The lap, one of Wehrlein’s 144 for the day, was enough to top the times by 0.038s from reigning champion Marco Wittmann, who set the fastest lap of the three days back on Tuesday.

“Today was good, and we were able to get in plenty of driving,” said Wehrlein. “I posted 144 laps to set the fastest time, ending this test week very positively.”

In third and fourth were another two BMW’s, one of Brazilian Augusto Farfus and the second of Antonio Felix da Costa, with the two cars posting times 0.045 and 0.083 respectively slower than the top time of Wehrlein.

The final test day, however, wasn’t a good one for Audi Sport, with the top RS 5 DTM of Adrien Tambay finishing seventh, 0.318s down on the top Mercedes. However, Tambay, along with team mates Jamie Green, Miguel Molina, Mike Rockenfeller and Edoardo Mortara, who only ran in the afternoon, posted a total of 5,600 kilometres during the test, just over 400 more than Mercedes.

Ulrich Fritz, Mercedes-AMG DTM Team Principal, said: “The team worked very intensively over the winter. We rounded off the last week of testing before the season starts with a positive result today. We now need to evaluate all the data before the first race weekend gets under way and continue to work towards Hockenheim in a focused manner.

“Only at the opening weekend will we then see how competitive we are compared to the other two manufacturers.”
