Aron Smith Fastest For BMR In Second Practice At Thruxton

1 Mins read

Aron Smith topped the day’s second free practice session at Thruxton as qualifying for the third Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship meeting of the season awaits.

The Irishman showed his card for BMR Racing after a stoppage in the 40-minute session, prior to which the Honda Yuasa Racing duo of Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden had been top of the pile.

The session endured a lengthy stoppage when Dan Welch left the circuit at the final chicane, his Proton Gen-2 colliding with the tyre barriers after a suspension failure.

When action resumed with 15 minutes on the clock, Smith jumped ahead of the Honda pairing to top the session, his effort of 1m17.325s being 0.170s ahead of Neal who carries the burden of 75kg of success ballast on Saturday, plus race one on Sunday.

Triple Eight jumped into the mix during the final 10 minutes also, Jack Goff sitting third overall while Andrew Jordan ended fourth in the second MG6 GT ahead of Andy Priaulx – the latter again top BMW.

Colin Turkington was next up for BMR Racing, while Shedden fell to seventh overall by the time the flag was waved to signal the end of the session. Adam Morgan (Mercedes), Josh Cook (Chevrolet) and Jeff Smith (Honda) rounded out the top 10, Cook again top rookie.

Kieran Gallagher suffered a right-rear puncture on his Toyota Avensis, while Martin Donnelly pulled up with a problem in his Infiniti Q50.

Jason Plato joined the session upon the restart but only completed one lap, his BMR Racing Volkswagen CC repaired following his crash in the day’s opening practice session.

Qualifying gets underway at 4:05, and you can keep up with the action here at www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk, or via Twitter at @tcfBTCC.
