Charles Leclerc got the better of Felix Rosenqvist to take victory in the third and final FIA European Formula 3 Championship race at Hockenheim on Sunday in another race hit by rain.
The race began behind the safety car due to the conditions, and it was pole sitter Rosenqvist who got away well at the start, but unlike in race two, he could not pull away from Leclerc, and on lap thirteen saw the Van Amersfoort Racing driver get passed exiting the hairpin.
The two had come close to touching a few laps earlier at the same spot, but once passed, Leclerc was able to maintain position at the front, even surviving a brief safety car period to remove Pietro Fittipaldi’s Fortec Motorsport machine from the side of the road at the Brazilian had collided with team-mate Hongwei Cao entering the Mercedes Arena.
Antonio Giovinazzi made it six podium finishes from six races with third spot for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin after inheriting the place on the final lap when Maximilian Günther spun at the first corner in the tricky conditions. The Mücke Motorsport driver ultimately finished sixth on the road.
Fourth went to Mücke Motorsport’s Mikkel Jensen ahead of another of the team’s drivers of Santino Ferrucci, but the American driver was penalised twenty seconds after forcing Lance Stroll off the road at the hairpin in an aggressive overtaking manoeuvre – the same two drivers also collided in race two.
Ferrucci’s penalty promoted Günther back up to fifth, while Prema Powerteam’s Stroll was sixth ahead of Motopark driver Markus Pommer. Jake Dennis was eighth in another of the Prema Powerteam entries, with Alexander Albon of Signature ninth ahead of Callum Ilott of Carlin, who had recovered from an early spin following a clash with Jensen.
