Swedish touring car driver Tomas Engstrom has confirmed that he will drive for the Engstler Motorsport TCR operation at the next round in Sochi and full time for the team in the 2015 TCR Asia Series, as reported on the TCR International Series website.
Engstrom is a veteran of the Swedish Touring Car scene, making his debut in a Chrysler Stratus in 1999, before moving on to becoming a Honda driver from 2002. Engstrom had some success over the following years in the STCC with various Honda models as well as being a regular competitor in the European Touring Car Cup, where he finished third overall in 2006, 2010 and 2011 and his highest finishing position of second place in 2007.
Engstler Motorsport have been a constant threat for victories in the inaugural TCR International Series this year, starting the season using Audi TT-R Cup cars under a special dispensation before moving onto using SEAT Leon Racers whilst they build their Volkswagen Golfs which will see action later this year.
Engstrom’s deal includes a one off appearance at the next round of the 2015 Series in Sochi, Russia before driving in a full campaign of the new TCR Asia Series for Engstler. Asia has always been a happy hunting ground for the Engstler squad where they have campaigned BMW Touring Cars for many years with much success.
Engstrom is excited by the opportunity to compete in TCR for such a famous team.
“From the first time I heard about the TCR regulations, I knew it would be successful and I was looking for an opportunity to be part of it. Therefore I am very happy and honoured that I was given the opportunity by an experienced and well known team such as the Liqui Moly Team Engstler.”
Engstrom will replace regular driver Lorenzo Veglia at Sochi , whilst his full time team-mate in the TCR Asia Series has yet to be announced.
