Leclerc dominates opener at wet Norisring

1 Mins read

Charles Leclerc took his fourth victory of the season in testing conditions at the Norisring, a race that started and ended behind the safety car as heavy rain fell.

The Van Amersfoort Racing driver led every lap, holding off the initial challenge of Alexander Albon before the Thai driver made a mistake in his Signature machine and dropped down off the podium places, allowing Leclerc to have an untroubled run to the chequered flag.

Antonio Giovinazzi finished second for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin after an impressive drive from seventh on the grid, surviving the last few laps behind the safety car with debris hanging from his front wing, although he was able to dislodge it by running repeatedly over the kerbing.

Prema Powerteam’s Felix Rosenqvist was able to pass Maximilian Günther of Mücke Motorsport for the final podium spot just before the safety car was deployed to remove four cars from the turn one run off area, including that of championship contender Jake Dennis, who collided with Arjun Maini heading down towards the corner, while Santino Ferrucci and Matt Solomon had their own mishaps at the same corner.

Albon finished fifth just ahead of his Signature team-mate Dorian Boccolacci, with Gustavo Menezes of Jagonya Ayam with Carlin seventh ahead of Prema Powerteam’s Lance Stroll.

Markus Pommer took ninth for Motopark, but the wet conditions did not help the German driver who had started fourth, while George Russell finished tenth for Carlin.
