Charles Leclerc continued his strong start to the Norisring weekend of the European Formula 3 Championship by taking pole position for race one.
The Van Amersfoort Racing driver set a best time 48.240s in the second of the two qualifying sessions, split due to the short nature of the German circuit and the high number of entrants.
For Leclerc, it is his first outright pole position of the season, having inherited his previous two pole’s when Felix Rosenqvist had his times deleted at Silverstone due to a technicality.
His time was just 0.009s faster than Signature’s Alexander Albon, although the Anglo-Thai driver will start third on the grid, just behind Mücke Motorsport’s Maximilian Günther, who topped the first of the two sessions.
Markus Pommer will start fourth on the grid for Motopark, while row three sees Prema Powerteam driver Rosenqvist line-up alongside the second Signature entry of Dorian Boccolacci.
Antonio Giovinazzi will start seventh for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, alongside fellow Italian Alessio Lorandi of Van Amersfoort Racing, while Mikkel Jensen of Mücke Motorsport and Jake Dennis of Prema Powerteam completed the top ten.
Dennis was one of a number of drivers to be caught out by a red flag during his qualifying session, when Pietro Fittipaldi stopping on track to pause the session while his Fortec Motorsports machine was removed.
