Guy Smith returns to the Pirelli World Challenge Championships this weekend as he replaces Butch Leitzinger for the final three rounds of the season.
Leitzinger has so far piloted the #20 Bentley Team Dyson Racing Continental GT3 in GT, the series’ premier class. However, he currently sits 14th in the standings after having only been on the podium twice this season, both at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
On the other hand, Leitzinger’s team-mate, Chris Dyson, is sixth with four podiums and a Road America win under his belt.
Smith will now drive the #20 car for the remainder of the season. After this weekend’s two races at Miller Motorsports Park comes a double-header at Sonoma Raceway followed by a sole Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca race to close the season.
He ran the final two weekends of the 2014 season, held at Sonoma and Miller, in an extra car. He took Bentley’s first North American win at the second-last round of the season at Miller.
“While the team has made good progress since joining the series in the middle of the 2014 season, we’re not yet where we need to be in terms of being competitive every race weekend,” commented Rob Dyson, founder and CEO.
“In our quest to increase the team’s performance in the Pirelli World Challenge we’ve been looking at every option available. Guy won for us last season at Miller and we know him very well from the many years he drove for us in the American Le Mans Series. This will be a seamless transition.”
